Indian Rummy is a popular card game that originated in India. It is also popular as Paplu, 13 card rummy, and 21 card rummy. The game is played with two decks of cards and requires at least two players to play. The objective of the game is to form sequences and sets of cards in your hand and meld them to win the game. The player who melds all their cards first wins the game.

History

The origins of Indian Rummy are not clear, but it is believed to have been derived from the Spanish card game Conquian. The game was introduced in India by the British and has been popular in the country ever since.

Rules

You can play the Indian Rummy with 2 decks of cards, and each deck contains 52 cards. 2-6 players can the play the game, and each player gets 13 cards. The remaining cards are placed face down on the table, and the top card is placed face up to start the game.

The objective of the game is to form sequences and sets of cards in your hand and meld them to win the game. A sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit, in consecutive order. A set is a group of three or more cards of the same rank, but different suits.

To start their turn, a player can either draw a card from the top of the deck or from the top card of the discard pile. After drawing a card, the player must discard one card from their hand face up on the discard pile.

Players must form at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, i.e., a sequence without any jokers. A pure sequence is mandatory for a player to win the game. The remaining sequences can be formed with the help of jokers.

If a player declares their hand, i.e., melds all their cards, and the cards are valid, the player wins the game. If a player is unable to form at least two sequences, they lose the game. The other players’ scores are calculated based on the value of the cards in their hands.

Scoring

The scoring in Indian Rummy is based on the value of the cards in the players’ hands. The value of each card is as follows:

  • Ace, King, Queen, and Jack: 10 points
  • Number cards: Face value (e.g., a 7 of hearts is worth 7 points)

If a player wins the game, they receive zero points. If a player loses the game, their score is calculated based on the value of the cards in their hand. The maximum score a player can receive is 80 points.

If a player declares their hand and wins, their opponents’ scores are calculated based on the value of the cards in their hands. The player who wins the game receives the sum of their opponents’ scores as their score.

Variations

Indian Rummy has several variations, including 13 card rummy, 21 card rummy, and Gin Rummy. The rules of these variations differ slightly, but the objective of forming sequences and sets remains the same.
